General Clinical

 University Hospital, San Antonio

General clinical rotation at the University Hospital provided me an opportunity to apply MNT in real life settings. I learned to perform MNT on a variety of cases ranging from simple to complicated conditions. I had the opportunity to review patients' cases as a whole, examining each case thoroughly. In depth review also provided me an opportunity to learn more about patient’s condition, underlying complications, pertinent labs and medication interactions.

My daily organizational skill played a key role as it helped me to stay on track and perform my responsibilities effectively. During nutrition education and counseling sessions I gained more confidence with time and was able to address patient’s cultural, socioeconomic and other factors related to diet and nutrition. To get a well rounded experience, I worked with 5 different dietitians. It was a rewarding experience to be a part of the patient’s care team.

Following are some highlights of my rotation:

  • Assessed, diagnosed, implemented and documented nutrition care plan, and monitored progress for patients with a wide range of medical problems
  • Conducted screenings, initial assessments, follow ups, nutritional education and counseling sessions,  chart reviews, test trays, calorie counts and meal rounds
  •  Performed calculation and recommendation of nutritional supplements and tube feedings
  • Familiarized with various diets, nutritional supplements and snacks provided to the patients
  • Utilized educational materials  to instruct patients on nutrition therapy
  •  Utilized nurse’s help or interpreter line in counseling patients with different ethnicities
  •  Prepared a written case study on a patient with gallbladder adenocarcinoma
